Lisa Hazell, MA is a Visual Storytelling Artist and Founder of Paperdoll Journal, a heritage storytelling continuum rooted in the African diaspora. Her interdisciplinary research and preservation frameworks are informed by graduate study within Johns Hopkins University's Advanced Academic Programs (AAP), alongside professional training in mindfulness facilitation through the Brown University School of Professional Studies, which supports the reflective and trauma-sensitive dimensions of her practice.

Drawing on more than 25 years of collaboration with film directors, cinematographers, costume designers, makeup artists, and actors, Hazell has helped shape atmosphere and character through hair design. Today, she works with traces of lived experience, archival materials, and visual storytelling practices to build continuity in cultural memory and public understanding.

Her current creative practice integrates documentary film, photography, collage, and narrative storytelling to illuminate Black family histories across pivotal American eras, including the Colonial period, the American Revolution, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Great Migration. Through this work, she situates personal and community narratives within broader global currents of African diaspora history and cultural continuity.

Hazell integrates embodied and trauma-sensitive approaches into her creative methodology, bringing attentiveness, presence, and deliberate pacing to her projects. Her background in real estate further deepens her sensitivity to space, thresholds, and belonging, strengthening the heritage continuum she advances through Paperdoll Journal.
