I believe that fair housing is more than a list of rules. Fair housing means that I participate in an open market that embraces equal opportunity. Fair housing regulations are found on all levels of government. The United States Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the buying, selling, renting or financing of housing. This includes discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, disability or any other characteristics from a protected class. State and local laws also prohibit discrimination, often on a broader set of criteria, including discrimination based upon sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and source of lawful income. These also may be covered by the federal fair housing laws’ protections against discrimination having a disparate impact on protected classes of individuals. I comply with applicable fair housing laws and regulations, including those at the state and local level.
